Herman Miller has become synonymous with innovative modern design furniture. Ever since it was founded in 1905, the manufacturer has introduced some of the most iconic pieces in the industry by many different designers that have all contributed towards the modern design movement. As one of the most prolific and influential producers of the modernist style, many of the pieces still sold to this day continue to stand the test of time. Let's take a brief look at a few.
The Aeron chair was introduced in 1994 by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf. Made almost entirely out of recycled materials, it has since spawned a few variations including the Aeron low stool and the Aeron side chair. The chair is now featured prominently as a permanent part of the Museum of Modern Art's collection.
We previously highlighted the Noguchi Table by Japanese American designer Isamu Noguchi. Introduced in 1947, the table's striking curbed wood pieces made it a unique piece in Herman Miller's catalog. After being in and out of production for several years and becoming highly sought after, Herman Miller has continued to produce the table since 1980.
The Marshmallow Love Seat or Marshmallow sofa by Irving Harper of George Nelson Associates remains a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. The first 186 sofas produced by Herman Miller became instant collector's items selling for over $10,000 and to this day, the 103” is one of the rarest versions in existence.
