    Danish Designer Hans Wegner

Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner was a major figure in bringing Danish design to the global masses.  His high-quality works and unique “Organic Functionality” style was one of his distinct trademarks.  During his lifetime, Wegner would create more than 500 distinct chairs, and over 100 of them would go on to become iconic mass-produced designs.

Hans Wegner was born in southern Denmark on April 2, 1914.  His experience began early in his childhood as an apprentice of master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg, where he discovered his affinity for wood.  He continued his apprenticeship into his teens and would eventually enroll at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Architectural Academy in Copenhagen.  After being exposed to the exhibits in the Carpenters' Guild Furniture Exhibits, Wegner decided to become a furniture designer and opened his design studio in 1943.

In 1944 Wegner launched his series of “China Chairs” inspired by the thrones of Chinese emperors, one of these being the Wishbone chair designed in 1949.  It would go on to become his most famous work and continues to be sold by Carl Hansen & Sønto this day.  Wegner's influence in modern design furniture was further solidified after his pieces were exhibited in New York's Museum of Modern Art and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.  He also won the Lunning prize and the Grand Prix of the Milan Triennale in 1951.
