Swiss modular furniture manufacturer USM Modular Furniture has become well-known for its collection of products designed for the home and office. Its signature USM Haller has become a modern design furniture classic and has earned itself a permanent place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art collection. The modular shelving system was initially built in 1965 for the company’s offices and has developed a sterling reputation for its virtually infinite capacity to be customized and configured to fit any space.
USM’s history dates all the way back to the late 1800s when Ulrich Schärer founded the company in Münsingen, Switzerland, in 1885 to be specific. Originally a family business focused on metal working, USM would go on to expand into sheet steel, window fittings, ornamental hinges, and more.
When Ulrich’s grandson Paul took over the company in 1961, USM broadened its focus and unveiled a modular glass-and-steel "flexible factory"courtesy of architect Fritz Haller. This factory opened in 1965 and thanks to Haller, he used his own modular architecture skills to create a furniture system that would ultimately result in USM’s now iconic Haller system.
More than 45 years after its debut the USM Haller continues to remain in strong demand and USM has since launched a Configurator tool that allows customers to customize and experiment with their own designs.
