We’re heading over to Spain today to take a closer look at Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola, a woman who has contributed many elegant works to modern design furniture. Born in the city of Oviedo in 1961, Urquiola’s passion for design was evident from a young age and she began her studies in Madrid, cultivating her knowledge of architecture and eventually graduating from Milan Polytechnic in 1989. Coincidentally, one her mentors during her studies would end up being none other than famous Italian designer Achille Castiglioni who oversaw her graduate thesis.
Though she was born in Spain, Urquiola has spent a great deal of her time in Italy, opening a studio in Milan in 2001. Besides Castiglioni she has worked with many notable names like Vico Magistretti, Piero Lissoni, and more. Her designs have also allowed her to work for many major Italian and American companies like BMW, Flos, Louis Vuitton, Kartell, and Panasonic. Urquiola’s work has earned plenty of awards and accolades including the Gold Medal of fine arts by the Spanish Government and the “Order of Isabella the Catholic” by His Majesty The King of Spain Juan Carlos I.
